To coincide with its ban, Holland & Barrett has launched its own range of mineral sun care

Holland & Barrett is the first major UK retailer to ban chemical sunscreens from its stores.

The health and beauty player now offers only 100% mineral sun care products across its full range, from brands including Ultrasun, Sukin, Moogoo, Jason and Green People.

Chemical sunscreens, which include oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate and octinoxate, are carbon-containing compounds which work by absorbing UV radiation.

With some chemical sunscreens linked to coral bleaching and the sale of oxybenzone and octinoxate-containing sunscreens now banned in Hawaii and Thailand, among other beach destinations, there is a move towards sun protection containing only zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide.
