Under eye patches have long been popular for skin prep and elevating under eye care, but 2026 has seen the skus go from a fun extra step to a status symbol and serious skin care boost thanks to next-gen formulas and tech-led treatments.

“The category has moved well beyond a disposable sheet,” says Dr Tego Kirnon-Jackman, Aesthetic Practitioner and founder of London-based clinic SKINMENU in the UK.

“There has been enormous hype around them recently, and I understand why: they feel refreshing, they cool the area, and they are an easy ritual before an event.

“But that is largely what they are delivering – a quick refresh.”

Ashley Stobart, founder of skin care brand Cosmetic Consult, which recently launched its cooling Miracle Cryo Eye Masks, adds: “I think eye masks are a symbol of self-care and self-love, which I am such a massive advocate of.

“I love how convenient they are and how they target a specific area of concern without you having to do any work.”

Kirnon-Jackman explains that these “patches work by creating a seal that pushes hydrating ingredients into the skin, which gives you instant hydration, temporary de-puffing and a smoother base for concealer”.

A key driver of the rising popularity of this skin care sub-category is its social media appeal, with under-eye patches doubling as both an accessory and status symbol in selfies.

Kirnon-Jackman agrees a huge reason for their spike in popularity comes down to “social media and travel content”.

Stobart adds: “They are not just a status symbol, they are a symbol of self-care too – they can be worn anywhere, whether you are getting your lashes done, out shopping, or at pilates.

“It is unofficial advertising, but the design never compromises the quality or effectiveness.

“It is like wearing a designer bag or t-shirt – just a lot more affordable."

When seeking out an efficacious under eye patch, she notes how the “ingredients are the most important thing to watch for”.

“Look for retinol, vitamin C, caffeine and peptides – those are the ones actually doing something for the skin.

“Hyaluronic acid and glycerin are in almost everything, so they are not a reason to buy an eye product in themselves, and avoid heavy fragrance and essential oils as the skin under your eye is the thinnest on your face and you do not want an irritant sitting there.”

Sharing some of the best advancements in recent months, Kirnon-Jackman notes that “LED eye patches have really taken off and there has been a huge rise in full LED masks more broadly, the at-home device market has grown enormously in the last few years”.

She adds: “Reusable silicone patches are another shift, letting you apply your own serum underneath so you control the actives, while microneedle patches use tiny dissolvable cones to deliver ingredients deeper.”
