Polyphenols extracted from the seed envelope of berries grown in the Nordic countries have an antimicrobial effect that could prove useful in skin care preparations, according to research by the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland.

Polyphenols, including tannins, provide plants with defensive capabilities against herbivores, pathogens and UV-B radiation. Others have antioxidative, antimicrobial, antiviral and anti-tumour properties.
