Regulation 1223/2009/EC on cosmetic products has been in force since 1 July 2013 and is based on Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP standard EN ISO 22716-2008). With the application of this standard, manufacturers implement suitable measures to control the manufacture, packaging, control and storage of cosmetic products.
In this demanding regulatory setting, microbiology plays a more and more predominant role, affecting product design (preservative efficacy tests) as well the analysis of ingredients and especially laboratory controls of finished products. Today, these microbiological controls are a strategic challenge for companies.
