in-cosmetics Global announced the winners of its Innovation Awards at a ceremony last night, honouring the most cutting edge innovations set to transform the future of beauty.
MossCellTech No. 1 from Mibelle Biochemistry scooped gold in the active ingredient category at the in-cosmetics Innovation Zone Best Ingredient.
The new product is a true novelty in two ways.
Firstly, it is the first active cosmetic ingredient derived from the juvenile form of Physcomitrella patens moss, produced via biotechnology in a reproducible and sustainable way.
Mosses were among the first land plants on Earth and are highly resilient.
The most interesting thing about MossCellTec No. 1, however, is that it helps maintain the efficient transport of molecules in and out of the skin cell nucleus via nuclear pores in the nuclear envelope, which separates the nucleus from the cytoplasm.
This flow of molecules is integral to cells’ response to environmental stimuli.
As we age, the efficiency of this transport decreases as RanBP17 protein, which controls the flow of molecules through the nuclear pore in certain types, including fibroblasts and neurons.
With ageing the expression of lamin A, the protein conferring mechanical support to the nuclear membrane, is likewise reduced, deforming the nucleus and accelerating ageing.
MossCellTech No. 1 helps maintain cell nucleus health, enabling skin to adapt to environmental changes.
It improves skin moisture, even under stressful conditions, and strengthens skin resilience against urban aggressors.
Meanwhile, Evonik triumphed in the functional ingredient category with Rehance Glycolipids, while Fuco Reverse by Lessonia took home the gold in the green ingredient category.
in-cosmetics 2018 is currently taking place from 17-19 April at the RAI in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
