L’Oréal is facing a lawsuit in the US over allegations that it did not disclose cancer risks related to chemical hair relaxer products.
A consumer fraud lawsuit was filed by the Arizona, US, Attorney General's Office against Softsheen-Carson and its parent company L’Oréal on 10 September.
In the lawsuit, it is claimed that during the advertisement and sale of chemical hair relaxer products – including brands Dark & Lovely, Optimum, and Mizani, and primarily marketed to African American women – it was not disclosed that the products “contained likely carcinogens, or had otherwise been linked to an increased risk of cancer, including ovarian and uterine cancers”, said the Arizona Attorney General's Office in a statement.
Hair relaxer products contain categories of chemicals that are toxic, the lawsuit claims, or that “lead to the formation of toxic compounds when applied to the scalp under customary and/or foreseeable use”.
