L'Oreal has inaugurated its first so-called ‘green energy’ production unit at its Libramont site in the south of Belgium. The site employs around 450 workers and produces colouring kits for hair care products sold on the European market.

The new biomethanisation unit will enable the site to produce its total electricity requirements and 80% of heating requirements. The balance of the heating will be supplied by natural gas but the company points out that the excess electricity production at the plant will largely offset the CO2 produced by natural gas consumption, making the site neutral in terms of carbon emissions.

The new unit has been developed by two Belgian companies, Eneco and Bio Energie Europa.
