Personal trainer David Valentine-Jones has a long list of A-list clients, including everyone from royalty to rock stars. This trainer to the elite shares his top five tips to achieve lean and lovely legs...

  • The most effective exercises for building great legs are weighted squats, deadlifts, lunges, step-ups and sprinting. If a customer can combine these exercises with a balanced diet they’ll see results.

  • Four hours of training a week with strength training and HIIT (high intensity interval training) cardio will get the best results.

  • If your customer can’t get to the gym, advise them to buy a set of dumbbells and train at home. But they should walk wherever possible: take the stairs instead of the lift, run up the escalators, get off the bus a stop early.

  • There is no magic cure for cellulite. It’s caused by weakened connective tissue and cells filled with fat and women are susceptible to it. The most effective way of reducing these localised fat stores is by training for fat loss through a healthy diet and regular exercise.

  • A common misconception is weight training will cause the legs to become big and bulky. In fact, because the legs contain the biggest muscles in the body, training them hard with added weight burns huge amounts of energy and will boost the metabolism – great for fat loss and lean, toned legs.
