A survey commissioned by make-up brand Bobbi Brown has revealed that women in the UK and Northern Ireland throw out over 94 million pieces of make-up every year after minimal use because they are disappointed with them.

The survey, which was carried out by Opinion Matters and featured 1000 women across the UK, found the average woman’s make-up bag to contain £81-worth of make-up, with 19% valuing their cosmetics at between £101-£150.

In addition, this average consumer will spend £125 in her search for the perfect foundation and will try seven different products before finding the right one. A significant 42% of those asked also believed poorly applied foundation to be their ultimate beauty nightmare. The second most popular answer, smudged lipstick, scored just 16%. Over a third said they were most likely to splash out on good quality foundation, while 14% claimed never to have found the right foundation.

“One of the most common errors women make when choosing a foundation is that they try to add colour to their skin – foundation is only there to even out the skin tone, not to add colour,” said brand founder Bobbi Brown. “Many women think foundation is all about heavy mask-like make-up. But it’s not. The right products should look like you’re not wearing any make-up at all – but that you just have great looking skin.”
