Discover XPaper, the revolutionary Lumson's paper airless

Published: 15-Jun-2023

Is it possible to unite luxury and sustainability in cosmetic packaging? With Lumson, the answer is a resounding yes

The Italian company, a leader in primary cosmetic packaging, has "revolutionised" the concept of luxury with its paper airless packaging with a pouch- XPaper, putting paper in the spotlight.

Lumson's paper airless option is the "perfect combination of smart design, safety, and functionality with a sustainable twist." And we'll explain why.

Greener than ever. XPaper takes sustainability to the next level. It’s consistent with the principles of the circular economy (Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle) because once the product inside is finished, the plastic components can be separated from the paper components, making recycling and material recovery easier. In addition, the paper bottle is also much lighter (-50%) than an equivalent PET bottle. XPaper uses 47% less plastic and reduces CO2 emissions by 34%*.

Safety. Besides meeting the growing demand for sustainability in the industry and the market, XPaper offers the maximum level of safety. The internal multi-layer pouch protects even the most delicate formula from the risk of contamination, ensuring its integrity.

Uniqueness. Versatility is the keyword for XPaper, and it's no coincidence that customisation is one of the key factors of this solution. Thanks to various printing technologies, XPaper can be personalised with different effects and decorations, from minimal to sophisticated, to give a unique final result. From offset printing (up to 6 colours) that enhances the graphics, to hot stamping which gives packaging a refined look that further accentuates the final result.

XPaper came to fruition thanks to a long-standing collaboration with the Politecnico di Milano Foundation and the technical and scientific support of Professor De Nardo's research group from the Department of Chemistry, Materials, and Chemical Engineering "G. Natta" at Politecnico di Milano.

Developing XPaper required a long and complex design phase and was also supported by the region of Lombardy with best practices that have been channeled into a new family of airless bottle solutions.

"Cosmetic companies aiming to reduce plastic use in their products by replacing it with paper-based solutions now have a new solution available," said Luigi De Nardo, Full Professor of Materials Science and Technology at Politecnico di Milano. "XPaper represents a new piece in the development of a comprehensive and sustainable strategy for cosmetic packaging. Each functional element of the packaging has been designed to meet product requirements and promote post-consumer recycling. In particular, the paper bottles are made using certified paper from sustainable sources and fully meet the structural requirements for product containment. They are also easily taken apart for recycling with paper and cardboard."

With these features, the packaging of the 'future' has a name: XPaper!

**According to a SPICE analysis comparing a 50ml XPAPER bottle with a Lumson PET bottle of the same size, the aggregate single score is -65%, and there is a 92% reduction in the use of resources, minerals, and metals.
