Within the first six weeks of 2015, five cosmetic product recalls were reported in RAPEX, all listed as failing to conform with the EU cosmetic product regulations[1]. As well as the obvious safety concerns for consumers, the cost of such a recall can be devastating for any business, not only in direct financial losses and potential penalties, but also in damage to brand image. And yet, almost two years on from the deadline for conforming to Cosmetics Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009, many – especially SMEs – choose to ignore the regulations, while others struggle to understand the requirements fully and remain only partially compliant.
