Protection of skin from UV and pollution continues to be a major story among new cosmetic ingredients introduced to market.

Here we are seeing more discussion around DNA repair, new mechanisms of skin renewal and ways of protecting from sun exposure amid a crackdown on the palette of filters available to formulators.

Maximising UV protection

With recent bans on traditional UV filters like oxybenzone and octinoxate, and the resulting increased reliance on mineral filters like zinc oxide (ZnO), formulators are looking at ways of increasing mineral filter levels for better SPF performance without the dreaded ‘skin whitening’ effect.

Hallstar Beauty introduced a new non-filter ingredient for the sun care category to resolve this issue.

SolaPure GLO is a natural multifunctional emollient utilising the curcuminoids found in turmeric root to boost sun protection efficacy.

Replacing 5% ZnO with the recommended 5-6% use level of SolaPure GLO is said to restore half the SPF loss, improve skin feel and maintain the decreased whitening benefits of lower ZnO concentration.

It provides anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antimicrobial effects, reducing the ROS production that leads to oxidative skin damage.
