CeraVe is looking to India for lessons in how to serve consumers' needs as they increasingly feel the effects of the environment on skin health beyond just UV.

Heat, humidity, changing weather and air pollution are among the environmental factors increasingly affecting skin health.

Nearly half (47%) of adults surveyed by CeraVe said their skin is more sensitive than it was five years ago, while 50% reported dryness linked to their environment or changing weather.

This is according to research presented at the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (EADV) Congress in Vienna last week.

An estimated 81% of adults in Europe are aware of the importance of protecting their skin barrier beyond UV exposure, according to the L’Oréal-owned skin care brand’s research among 6,0000 adults across the UK, France, Germany, Italy and Spain.

However, just 22% of those surveyed use products specifically designed to support the skin barrier.

“Everyone understands UV exposure, but pollution, climate, hot, cold, humidity – these can affect the skin,” said Gene Colon, Global Senior VP of Medical Relations and Communications at CeraVe.

“Only 22% are doing anything specific in terms of protecting their skin barrier.”

While people know about the effects of UV on the skin and wear sunscreen in response, more education is needed around what actions can be taken to protect the skin from these other environmental factors.

“The [impact of the] environment is a new thing globally,” Colon continues.
