Beauty, fashion’s ‘fluffy little sister’, for decades has been resigned to the back pages of lifestyle magazines and dismissed as a career choice for the uneducated.

But a group of high profile industry veterans – from retail executives to salon owners and product formulators – are taking matters into their own hands by making over the UK government's perception of the cosmetics business.

Formally launched last year, the British Beauty Council is spearheaded by Millie Kendall whose CV includes founding of BeautyMart, introducing Shu Uemura to the European market, launching Aveda in the UK in 1997, and setting up her own product line, Ruby & Millie.

The ultimate goal of the non-profit is to represent the voices, opinions and needs of the beauty industry at government level. Here Kendall, three members of the British Beauty Council’s advisory board and a patron discuss the multi-billion industry and how beauty is driving the British economy....
