Beneo produces fragrance from within
Rose confectionery releases scent through the skin
The company has worked with Bulgarian confectionery manufacturer Alpi on the development of a rose-based candy called Deo, which is said to taste good but then once eaten a rose fragrance is released through the skin.
The rose scent, said to be romantic and uplifting as well as being a natural antioxidant, is achieved through the ingredient geraniol, a colourless liquid found in plants such as rose, lavender and vanilla. Once consumed, the aroma leaves the body through the pores, creating a naturally sweet smell that the company says can last for hours.
“The effect is very similar to the familiar way a pungent ingredient such as garlic transmits odour through the skin, says Beneo. “In the case of garlic, strong smelling sulphur compounds form allyl methyl sulfide, which cannot be digested and is instead excreted through the pores.”
In this case, Beneo has also supplied natural sugar replacement Isomalt. This means Deo is sugar-free but also, because Isomalt dissolves slowly, there is said to be a prolonged rose flavour in the mouth but also an even longer lasting fragrance effect on the body.
