From collagen shots and skin brightening capsules to hair growth gummies, walk into any pharmacy or scroll through your wellness feed and you will be bombarded with the line-up of products that promise beauty through biology. 

The global nutricosmetics market is worth upwards of US$7bn dollars, but the category is overshadowed in regulatory terms, with oversight varying across different authorities depending on jurisdiction.

For brands in this area, the issue is that their products are neither a food nor a drug, and neither do they fit within the traditional cosmetics category.

They work on the outside, from the inside, yet do not fit easily within a legal box. 

The classification dilemma

The existing conventional cosmetic regulatory framework was written with topical, and to a certain point, generic products in mind.
