The British Aerosol Manufacturer’s Association (BAMA) has developed an Excel-based model to predict exposure to aerosols, in light of REACH requirements stipulating that downstream users of chemicals must demonstrate the safety of their products.

The Indoor Air Model can be download free of charge from BAMA’s website, through the link www.bama.co.uk/bama_guides, and is a mathematical model that can accurately predict concentrations in a room, after an aerosol has been sprayed. It provides a “viable alternative to testing every product formulation”, according to BAMA.

Both aerosol fillers and marketers now need to be assessed on whether consumer exposure to airborne ingredients of their aerosol spray products constitutes a hazard to human health. BAMA says that its new model “is a simple but powerful tool”, which is validated by experts from BRE1 and will help those affected make that assessment.
