Film formers are must-have ingredients to provide hair hold & manageability in styling formulations. The choice of natural alternatives to synthetic film formers is limited and they often bring performance and sensory drawbacks. While end-consumers do look for more sustainable hair care products, they are not ready to compromise neither on the performance nor on the sensory of their products.
Containing over 50% of carbon from plant biomass, Covestro’s new bio-based film former Baycusan® eco E 1000 fulfills the definition of a derived natural ingredient according to the ISO 16128-1 norm. As a result, the Baycusan® eco products have an improved carbon footprint while keeping the unique technical features of Baycusan® polyurethane technology.
This naturally-derived polymer therefore opens new perspectives for formulators, making natural hair care formulations with high performing styling properties possible.
Baycusan® eco E 1000 ensures a comparable hold to competitive synthetic styling polymers and over performs most synthetic polymers when it comes to create a flexible and long lasting style and achieve high hair manageability.
Its humidity resistance property imparts best curl retention to styling formulations, even in very humid climates. It forms a thermally stable film and shows best-in-class thermal stability and stays unaltered even at temperatures up to 280°C. This is higher than most synthetic benchmark technologies and much higher than natural polymer that typically show poor thermal stability. This feature enables to develop hair styling formulations providing protection against heating devices.
Baycusan® eco E 1000 excellent humidity resistance provides best hair manageability with outstanding straightening and frizz control properties. Last but not least, this new bio-based polymer provides good sensory properties and conditioning effect on hair resulting in low flaking and non-tacky formulations.
