Tropic’s latest sunscreen line has been awarded the Protect Land + Sea Certification by Haereticus Environmental Laboratory (HEL) for its plant-preserving ingredients list.
The line, which launched in April this year, includes the brand’s Great Barrier sun lotion, available in SPF15, 30 and 50, Sun Day facial UV defence SPF50 and SunStick SPF50+, as well as its Skin Shade tinted facial product and sun cream.
Each product is blended with a host of ingredients that will not impact the world’s land and marine life.
Common sunscreen ingredients such as oxybenzone, octocrylene and octinoxate are known to be harmful to coral reefs, causing them to be banned from personal care products in Hawaii in 2018.
Speaking to Cosmetics Business Tropic’s founder and CEO Susie Ma said she had opted for HEL’s certification to ensure the brand’s products are “are truly as harmless as possible”.
Speaking about the range’s ingredients list, she said: “Our Skin Shade range is formulated using mineral sun filters only, including non-nano zinc oxide and titanium dioxide.
“Our Great Barrier range includes a combination of both mineral and chemical sun filters.
“This means that while they still contain the mineral ingredients – zinc oxide and titanium dioxide – like the Skin Shade range, they also contain some safe chemical sun filters too.”
When asked if the beauty industry could do more to reduce its impact on the sector, Ma said businesses have a responsibility to be a force for good.
“Human activity is the sole reason plastic ends up in the ocean, and once it’s there, it’s hard to get it out.
“Personal care and beauty products account for one third of all landfill waste too. We, as an industry, have to be better.”
Consumers can also return Tropic’s sun care packaging to be recycled.
