Symrise takes home the prize at inaugural awards

Judge Stewart Long praised their risk assessment approach to protect against harmful exposure to chemicals, without reliance on animal testing.

The winners of the first-ever Cosmetics Business Innovation Awards (CBIAs) have been revealed, celebrating the outstanding developments and achievements of companies across the global cosmetics and personal care supply chain.

The B2B-focused awards programme spotlights the very best in ingredients, packaging, contract manufacturing, technology, testing, regulatory and compliance.

In a particularly strong category, Long was impressed by Symrise and their use of in vitro, in silico and microbiome studies to evaluate developmental toxicity and conclude the safety of the exposed worker, without the need for animal testing.

The way in which Symrise framed their study, collected data and compared their findings against existing teratogenicity animal data was also particularly strong.

Overall, the study demonstrates an effective shift from relying on animal studies to predict whether a chemical causes particular toxic effects, which is particularly important under the EU’s regulations against unnecessary animal testing.
