Swallowfield was approached by British actor Richard E Grant, who wanted the packaging of his new fragrance, JACK, to be designed in order to reflect his Britishness. Jane Fletcher, Group Sales and Marketing Director at Swallowfield said: “We had great fun exploring many design and packaging routes – from a Union Jack on the carton to glossy black and amber glass bottles, before arriving at the heavy weighted clear glass bottle.”
The carton itself evolved into a pillar-box red design, which was inspired by a lift that Grant had seen while in Japan. The Liberty-designed 'J' round logo was added to the carton, which Grant said immediately made it look “more classy and desirable” than a Union Jack inspired box. Instead, Swallowfield created a Union Jack cotton drawstring calico bag in which the fragrance is contained. The drawstring calico bag is printed to look like vintage Union Jack bunting, in order to not lose the British nature of the product.
