Shortlists announced for in-cosmetics awards

Finalists for the inaugural in-cosmetics Green Ingredient Award and the 2014 Innovation Zone Best Ingredient Awards revealed


Reed Exhibitions has announced the finalists for its inaugural in-cosmetics Green Ingredient Award and its Innovation Zone Best Ingredient Awards.

The new Green Ingredient Award, in association with Organic Monitor, honours a raw material or ingredient that makes a significant environmental or social difference in the area of sustainability. It garnered more than 50 entrants, demonstrating the industry’s commitment to creating a more sustainable future. Of the ten finalists, three will go on to win gold, silver and bronze in an awards ceremony at in-cosmetics on 2 April.

The finalists were selected by an expert panel of judges including Dr Pauline Hili, founder and Technical Director of Neal’s Yard Remedies; Katharina Post, Head Galenic Development NOC, Weleda; Dr Erik Schulze zur Wiesche, Basic Development Hair Care, Henkel; Amarjit Sahota, President, Organic Monitor; and Judi Beerling, Technical Director, Organic Monitor.

The finalists include:

Alban Muller International with scurvy grass extract, a 100% natural extract of the Scurvy Grass plant, which is rich in vitamin C, a recognised anti-ageing agent.

Akott with Akosky Apium, a hydrosoluble celery cell culture extract which in vitro is very efficient in stimulating pro-collagen I and III, and fibronectin.

Citróleo with Organic and Natural Alpha-bisabolol, a monocyclic unsaturated sesquiterpene alcohol obtained from the candeia wood with anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antimycotic properties.

Colonial Chemical with Poly Suga Mulse D9, a non-ionic fragrance solubiliser made from 100% biobased raw materials, used in oil-in-water (O/W) emulsification, dispersion or solubilisation of fragrances and all types of oils.

Earth Supplied Products with ESP SafeGuard WS Clear, an inexpensive, all-natural, biodegradeable, sustainable, water soluble plant based extract that provides moisturisation and skin soothing properties, while removing the need for traditional preservatives in many formulas.

EPHYLA SAS with Frametime, a natural emulsion stabiliser especially designed for cold process, saving time and energy.

Kahai SAS with Kahai Oil, an exotic oil derived from the cacay crop that is 100% natural, rich in vitamins E, F and retinol that nourishes, softens and repairs damaged skin and hair.

Kalichem Italia with Olivoil Fruttoside, an association of non-ionic surfactants based on fructose, olive oil fatty acids and selected vegetal amino-acids.

 Minasolve with MinaCare Pentiol Green+, a new and unique version of pentylene glycol that is produced from renewable vegetal raw materials.

Oleos with DIAM’Oléactif, a synergistic concentrate of biomolecules of 100% vegetable origin, extracted from quercus suber and cocs nucifera trees using oleo-eco-extraction patented green technology.

Also announced on 2 April will be the winners of the 2014 Innovation Zone Best Ingredient Awards. This year's finalists were selected by a panel of judges including Angela Eppler PhD, Senior R&D Scientist at Pfizer Consumer Healthcare and Dr Jianzhong Yang, PhD, President of Beauty & Health Innovation Co., Ltd., Senior Scientist at Belcorp, John Jiménez, and President and Owner of Elysee Scientific Cosmetics, Linda R Marshall. They include:

Ashland Specialty Ingredients with N-DurHance A-1000 polymer, a durable solution for hair repair and conditioning which works through in situ controlled flocculation (ISCF) helping to restore hydrophobicity to hair.

Gattefossé with CYTOBIOL IRIS A², a synergistic blend of iris, vitamin A and zinc that has been clinically shown to reduce skin imperfections and minimise pores.

Gattefossé with EMULIUM MELLIFERA, a new generation of PEG-free emulsifier that auto-adapts to skin type and climate.

Induchem with Redensyl, a new hair growth galvaniser which targets the hair follicles’ stem cells.

Lipotec with ARGIRELOX peptide, which is directed at reducing expression lines by modulating muscle contraction.

Lubrizol with CHROMAPOL 5 Polymer, a new polymer technology that provides sensory innovation in hair colour applications.

Mibelle Biochemistry with Snow Algae Powder, a novel active, based on an extract of snow algae, to increase skin’s longevity.

Sederma with Sebuless, a new multifunctional ingredient designed and demonstrated to mattify and equalise the skin tone of oily and acne-prone skin, in just one month.

Two further awards will also be presented. The Cosmetics & Toiletries R&D Award for Best New Ingredient honours ingredients for their innovative design and will go to a winner chosen from five finalists. Meanwhile, the first Beiersdorf Innovation Pitch Award will identify the most forward-thinking ideas and concepts in a unique contest.
