Sephora closes stores in France amid riots

After demonstrations in France turned violent, Sephora closed stores to keep staff safe, the LVMH-owned retailer’s President of Europe and Middle East, Catherine Spindler, said

Sephora closed its stores in France amid riots that have rocked the country due to concerns around staff safety.

The LVMH-owned beauty retailer closed its stores on the evening of Saturday 17 October and all day Sunday 16 October, the President of Europe and Middle East, Catherine Spindler, said in a post on LinkedIn.

“Yesterday, several of our stores in France were ransacked,” Spindler’s post read.

“Even more seriously, women and men in our teams have been confronted with situations of violence, fear and great tension.

“And it is them that I am thinking of above all today.

"Behind each window, behind each sign, there are faces, stories, women and men who practice their profession with passion, to welcome, advise, share.

“They should never have to fear for their safety when they go to work.

“Yesterday we took the decision to close all our stores from 5pm, then to keep our entire city center network closed today.

“Because no business consideration will ever weigh more than the safety of our teams and customers.”

Demonstrations in France over education services turned violent over the weekend, with rioting, looting and vandalism in Paris and other cities.
