The parent company of Rose Inc and Jonathan Van Ness' JVN Hair has started job cuts as it looks to save US$250m.
Amyris is a biotechnology company that specialises in synthetic renewable ingredients for the beauty and food industries.
The California ingredients company is best-known for its sugar cane-derived squalane, which has now been licensed to Givaudan.
Amyris ventured into brand ownership in 2015 with the launch of skin care line Biossance.
It now specialises in celebrity-fronted brands, including Rosie Huntington-Whitely's make-up line Rose Inc, menopause care brand Stripes by Naomi Watts and Tia Mowry's hair care brand 4U.
Amyris announced plans to reduce its workforce worldwide, decrease operating expenses and streamline its business portfolio as part of the cost saving measures.
The company has not confirmed which markets or workforces will be impacted.
Amyris' CEO John Melo has stepped down following the onboarding of accounting giant PWC to support the business restructuring.
Melo will also leave the Board and has been replaced by Amyris' CFO Han Kieftenbeld as Interim CEO.
"John's dedication and leadership were instrumental in the evolution of Amyris' Lab-to-Market technology platform and the development of our diversified consumer brands portfolio," said Geoffrey Duyk, Board Chair of Amyris.
"We have utmost confidence in Han's ability to lead Amyris as Interim Chief Executive Officer through this critical period of transformation."
Kieftenbeld said the company is making "tough choices" regarding the redundancies.
"We thank our departing employees for their efforts, dedication and contributions to Amyris," he added.
