UK retailer Poundland has opened several stores in Spain under the name Dealz.
Poundland opened two stores in July in Torremolinos and Alicante, while on 30 October the group opened its first store in Madrid. The retailer's goal is to open up to ten stores in one year and to create up to 500 jobs.
The stores stock over 3,000 skus spanning 17 categories including cosmetics and personal care. Álvaro Villamizar, Country Manager for Spain, said: “The store’s concept comes from England where everything costs £1; they are not white label brands – we know people go to white label brands for their price – but people always return to their favourite brands. We have a great opportunity on the Spanish market.”
Before Christmas 2014 there will be one store store opening in Málaga and another in Madrid, totalling five in Spain. They plan to open ten Spanish stores before summer 2015. Stores are between 700 and 900sqm with 40-50 employees each. Founded in 1990 in the UK, Poundland has a turnover of €1.3bn. It has approximately 500 british stores and has been present in Ireland since 2011. Spain is the first country the retailer has entered on the continent.
