Asia drives beauty business gains

The Procter & Gamble Company has maintained top line growth momentum in its fiscal Q3 and grew core operating profit. The company delivered 2% net sales growth to $20.2bn for the January to March quarter. Organic sales increased 3% driven by price increases. Diluted net earnings per share from continuing operations were $0.81, down 14% due to non-core charges of $0.13 per share. These items included incremental restructuring charges due to P&G’s recently announced productivity and cost saving plans, says the company. Operating profit, meanwhile, decreased 11% but adjusted for non-core charges grew 2%.

P&G’s beauty net sales increased 1% to $4.8bn on unit volume growth of 1% (organic sales grew 2%). Within beauty, hair care increased in low single digits behind high single digit growth in developing regions, the result of innovation activity and distribution expansions in Asia, which offset mid single digit decline in developed markets. Volume in skin care, personal care and cosmetics decreased in low single digits due to heightened competitive activity in North America, while volume in prestige products increased mid singe digits. In prestige products P&G added SK-II to its portfolio.

Meanwhile grooming net sales, comprising shave care and appliances, were in line with the prior year period at $2bn (up 2% in organic sales) with unit volume up 1%.

In other news, P&G has enlisted actress and musician Zooey Deschanel to represent its Pantene Beautiful Lengths Collection. The 500 Days of Summer star, who sings in indie band She & Him will appear in all elements of the brand’s marketing campaign from August 2012.
