Will oversaturation lead B Corp to lose its credibility?

With each passing year more businesses than ever are gaining their B-Corp status. But are its standards beginning to slide? Cosmetics Business investigates

The desire for brands to become B Corp certified has never been more apparent in 2023.

More than 1,000 businesses became certified last year, pushing the total number enrolled on the sustainability-focused scheme to 6,153 at the time of writing.

It is an aspect B Labs, the non-profit behind the scheme, is often keen to celebrate, with frequent media communications pointing to the growing number of businesses on its list.

For this year’s B Corp Month, B Labs also focused its efforts on shining a spotlight on exemplary brands with its ‘Go Beyond’ campaign.

While the influx of companies can be considered a win for environmentalism, there is also evidence that the space is becoming oversaturated.
