The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has submitted a proposal to restrict intentionally added microplastic particles, which it says could reduce the amount of microplastics released into the environment in the EU by about 400,000 tonnes over the next 20 years.

The agency says that following an assessment of the health and environmental risks, it concludes that an EU-wide restriction is justified.
