Sales rise significantly

Continued recovery in western cosmetics markets has been reported by Japanese cosmetics group Shiseido. The company also says markets in China and other emerging countries have put on continuous growth in the sector.

Figures will be published later this year but Shiseido says its sales abroad for the first quarter of 2011 rose year-on-year in Europe, the Americas and Asia-Oceania.

Sales in Europe rose significantly following the introduction of the

company's make-up line and Shiseido Benefiance together with duty-free sales and gains from an increase in the number of outlets in Russia. Apart from China, high growth was registered in the Taiwanese and Korean markets while in the Americas strong sales of NARS and Zolos were recorded. Additional sales came from Bare Escentuals and contributed to a large rise in total sales – more than twice the level in the first quarter of 2010.

Meanwhile sales from Shiseido's Japanese business in the month of May stagnated at the same level as May 2010. However, segmentally, sales of self-selection cosmetics rose year-on-year helped by strong growth in the Ma Cherie hair care line and the Ag+ range of deodorants. Sales of skin care products sold as counselling cosmetics remained steady but OTC sales declined as the market remained challenging.
