Meet the experts judging the Pure Beauty Global Awards 2020

The Pure Beauty Global Awards are gearing up to hit Amsterdam as the event returns for its third year. This year the awards have 39 categories, having grown considerably within the first two years of operation in Dubai.

Pure Beauty has curated a special panel of beauty and skincare experts from across the industry to help choose the winners.

Here are the judges taking on the role of deciding who wins big at the 2020 Pure Beauty Global Awards:

The brand creator: Millie Kendall MBE

Millie Kendall MBE

During her career as a retail maven and brand creator, Millie Kendall has been instrumental in the success of many cult brands. In 2018 Millie, alongside Anna-Marie Solowij and Kate Shapland, founded the British Beauty Council, a non-profit organisation that aims to support a successful, innovative, and inclusive British beauty industry. The British Beauty Council recently hosted the first London Beauty Week in September 2019.

The beauty journalist: Anna-Marie Solowij

Anna-Marie Solowij

Anna-Marie Solowij is an award-winning beauty journalist with more than 25 years experience. She writes for the Financial Times How to Spend It, The FT Weekend, The Gentlewoman, and Town & Country and acts as a brand and strategy consultant for the industry. In 2012 she co-founded BeautyMART, a disruptive and ground-breaking approach to beauty retail. BeautyMART was the first beauty boutique in-store and online featuring a mix of globally-sourced products.

The accomplished artist: Clayton Reid

Clayton Reid

A key member of the NARS Artistry Team, Clayton perfected his technique on the high-fashion runways at London Fashion Weeks where he worked with designers such as JW Anderson and Creatures of the Wind. His work has been published in Vogue, Marie Claire and L’officiel and he has worked with brands such as Erdem and Christopher Kane. It is his love for fashion, beauty and artistry that led him to become the accomplished artist he is today.

The fragrance expert: James Craven

James Craven

James Craven has worked in perfumery for the past 30 years, a career which has been the apogee of a lifetime’s interest in perfume and its interaction with history, costume, psychology and the whole business of what makes the human-animal tick. After some years working at Harrods, James found his dream billet at the Specialist Perfumery LES SENTEURS where he now works as the boutique’s Perfume Archivist.

The award-winning hairstylist: Lorraine Dublin

Lorraine Dublin

Lorraine began her career over 20 years ago. Her impressive list of clients includes Serena Williams, Kelly Rowland, Thandie Newton and John Boyega. Her extensive training and expertise with all hair types has led her work to be published in titles such as Vogue, Stylist, Black Hair, Sports Illustrated, Forbes and Wonderland. She currently co-owns My Hair Bar in West End’s Bloomsbury.

The organic skin care expert: Dr Pauline Hili

Originally from Melbourne, Australia, Dr Pauline Hili is now one of the UK’s top organic skincare experts, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and is Founder and Creator of Nourish London, an award winning, certified organic skincare brand. Trusted and acclaimed by beauty experts, and with over 30 years of expertise, Pauline has published numerous research papers and is the author of the book “The Antimicrobial Properties of Essential Oils.”

The fragrance fancier: Lisa Hipgrave

Lisa Hipgrave

For the past twelve years, Lisa Hipgrave has been Director of IFRA UK. Lisa is a highly experienced fragrance specialist, and before being involved in IFRA UK, Lisa previously worked in the industry for 20 years as a perfumer, and also as the Managing Director of an international fragrance house. Lisa has worked on all types of fragranced products including Fine Fragrance, personal care, candles and haircare for many brands and high street names.

The hair hero: Laura Husband

Laura Husband

Laura Husband is the former editor of Pure Beauty and has spent the past five years writing about the beauty retail sector with expert knowledge on everything from new product launches to global trends. She was chair of the judging panel for the UK’s Pure Beauty Awards for three years and is now the editor of the UK’s leading magazine for the hairdressing sector – Hairdresser’s Journal.

The A-list facialist: Nichola Joss

Nichola Joss

Nichola Joss is one of the beauty industry’s most revered skincare, self tanning and nail experts and returns as a judge for the third year. She is the beauty therapist of choice for a whole bevy of A-list beauties such as Scarlett Johansson, Meghan Markle, Hilary Swank, Gisele Bundchen and Gwyneth Paltrow. Best known for her miraculous lymphatic drainage massage facials, Nichola is one of the most well-reputed celebrity skincare experts in the industry.

The cosmetics consultant: Emma Reinhold

Emma Reinhold

Emma Reinhold is an award-winning journalist and communications specialist who has covered the beauty beat for almost 20 years. Previously Group Editor of Cosmetics Business, she has worked with leading beauty brands including Elemis, Bamford and The Organic Pharmacy to develop their communication and marketing strategies, as well as leading the beauty and fashion divisions for The Soil Association.

The body care cognoscente: Vivienne Rudd

Vivienne is Mintel’s Director of Innovation & Insight, Beauty and Personal Care. With over 20 years of experience in the beauty industry, Vivienne heads up Mintel’s beauty consultancy team, delivering projects concerning every aspect of the beauty industry. She works closely with manufacturers, suppliers and packagers, helping them to identify and analyse trends, making them relevant to their business & enabling them to find commercial opportunities.

The product junkie: Amaya Smith

Amaya Smith

Amaya Smith is the Founder of the Product Junkie, an online and brick and mortar boutique featuring products for naturally curly haired women. Amaya stopped straightening her hair over a decade ago but discovered that there was no upscale retail experience that catered to women who wanted to look beautiful and professional wearing their curly hair – so she started the Product Junkie.

The beauty guru: Theresa Yee

Theresa Yee

Theresa Yee is a beauty expert and editor with more than 10 years’ experience in the cosmetic industry, and has a broad knowledge of the beauty market across various categories. Theresa manages and edits WGSN’s beauty directory, reporting on everything from emerging trends to forecasting trends two years ahead of the season. Theresa travels extensively, attending beauty trade shows and events around the globe.

The skincare and formulation whizz: Belinda Carli

Belinda Carli

Belinda Carli

Belinda is the Director of the Institute of Personal Care Science, an International Training Organisation providing Certificate and Diplomas via distance education in the formulation, development, brand management and regulatory affairs for personal care and cosmetics. She is a regular presenter at major International events and her work can be found in many national and international publications and Special Chem formulators site.

How the awards are judged

Pure Beauty’s editorial team review and test all entries and create a shortlist of finalists. The shortlist is then passed on to our international judging panel, who vote for the winners.

The judging criteria is based on a product’s usability, effectiveness, unique selling points, packaging (where relevant), functionality and innovation.

Winners will be announced live at the ceremony taking place at Hotel Okura, Amsterdam on 14 May 2020.
