Johann Wiechers launches Formulating for Efficacy
Cosmetic science consultant Johann Wiechers has developed a software programme, Formulating for Efficacy, to guide people through the formulation process.
“There are so many factors to consider in formulating that by the time it comes to the efficient skin delivery of your active ingredient, most formulators simply hope for the best,” says Wiechers. “It is simply too difficult for most formulators to transform complex skin delivery theories into practical formulations.”
Using the new programme, users enter the emollients they want to use, the active ingredients and a few other properties, such as concentration of the active, and the rest is calculated for them. The system needs to be calibrated by doing a few solubility experiments of the active in some emollients, and the programme will either optimise an existing formulation, make additions to an existing formulation or propose the most effective combination of emollients for a complete new formulation.
Wiechers says: “It’s only the beginning of a formulation as you will still need to add other formulation components such as surfactants, perfumes and preservatives (where applicable), but it puts you at least in the Himalayas when looking for Mount Everest delivery!”
