Mixed blessings for Shiseido

Best growth overseas

Japanese cosmetics group Shiseido has reported a 5% drop year-on-year in sales through its Japanese domestic company for the month of July, despite strong sales of Haku and Benefique.

Strong sales were also achieved with Integrate, Anessa and AG+ in the self-selection cosmetics segment, though sales of Cherie were down against the very strong growth recorded in July 2010. Sales of self-selection cosmetics in July declined overall against the year earlier level. Sales of toiletries also fell but OTC sales of both counselling and self-selection cosmetics recovered to a level close to that of July last year.

Reviewing second quarter 2011 – April to June – the company reports steady sales in western markets and an upward trend in the China dominated Asian market.

Total foreign sales for the second quarter rose in both Europe and the Asia-Oceania region. Growth slowed in the Americas but European sales rose year-on-year with robust sales in Spain and Russia, where Tsubaki was launched in June.
