L’Oréal Professionnel is launching a programme this summer to support hairdressers struggling with their mental wellbeing.
Head Up, created in partnership with non-profit National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), will raise awareness of the mental health challenges facing stylists and provide them with access to free tools and resources.
“Following a three-year social listening project analysing millions of conversations and comments posted on digital platforms, and a survey carried out in seven countries involving 1,750 hair professionals, we revealed [that] mental health comes out on top as the number-one challenge facing hairdressers,” said Ann-Marie Humphreys, General Manager of L’Oréal Professionnel.
“In direct response, this summer we launch Head Up – a programme… to support and provide resources to the hairdressing community.”
65% of stylists have experienced anxiety, depression or burnout in their careers, found the company.
Hairdressers also spend around 2,000 hours per year listening to clients, found the brand, offering a service that goes “beyond the physical transformation of a haircut or hair colour”.
L’Oréal Professionnel is aiming to reach and support 100,000 hairdressers with its Head Up programme.
The free education will feature four modules designed to provide stylists with the tools to address anxiety, burnout or depression relating to their professional career.
Module one will teach hairdressers how to recognise stress, anxiety, depression and burnout in themselves and their coworkers.
Module two will address self-care and teach stylists how to create a routine that works for them.
Module three will cover how to reduce work stress by setting boundaries with L’Oréal’s list of prepared professional statements and tips.
Module four will summarise the key takeaways.
The training has been created in partnership with NAMI and L’Oréal-endorsed hairdressers Daniel Mason-Jones and Hayley Jepson.
