The group’s Cell BioPrint device claims to tell users exactly what their complexion needs in ‘just five minutes’ using advanced proteomics to understand skin's biology

L'Oréal Groupe has unveiled a device it claims will help demystify skin care for consumers, providing a personalised skin analysis “in just five minutes”.

Cell BioPrint is said to give users a breakdown of how their skin is ageing and which cosmetic ingredients they are more responsive to using advanced proteomics – the study of how protein composition in the human body affects skin ageing.

The French beauty company said the device measures different biomarkers – molecules beneath the skin packed with information about skin health – to decipher the skin’s biological age and predict potential cosmetic issues before they become visible.

This will enable consumers to “take proactive steps to help protect the beauty of their skin,” read a statement from L’Oréal Groupe, helping to prevent product trial and error.

L’Oréal Groupe’s tech incubator has been working with Korean start-up NanoEntek to build the personalised skin assessment tool.

Cell BioPrint features NanoEntek’s microfluidic lab-on-a-chip technology, which leverages some of NanoEnTek’s 100+ patents to measure the presence of L’Oréal‘s protein biomarkers in five minutes.

L’Oréal Groupe unveiled Cell BioPrint ahead of the 2025 CES technology show in Las Vegas, US, this month.

Cell BioPrint is scheduled to pilot with a L'Oréal brand in Asia later this year.

"At L'Oréal, we are always looking toward the future of beauty, blending cutting-edge discoveries with our long-standing beauty expertise,” said Barbara Lavernos, Deputy CEO in charge of Research, Innovation and Technology at L’Oréal Groupe.

“With skin being the largest organ, and a key part of people’s wellbeing, we are thrilled to unveil Cell BioPrint, an exclusive microfluidic lab-on-a-chip technology coupled with our century-long skin science leadership.

“With the Cell BioPrint device, we offer people the ability to discover deeper insights about their skin through specific biomarkers and to proactively address the beauty and longevity of their skin.”

To use L’Oréal’s Cell BioPrint, a facial tape strip is placed on the user’s cheek to gather a sample, which is then loaded into the device for analysis.

While Cell BioPrint processes the sample, several images of the user’s face are taken, while a short questionnaire about their skin concerns is also filled in.
