Queer Eye star Jonathan Van Ness on Amyris bankruptcy’s silver lining

JVN launched in 2021 as a luxury hair line for everyone, but just two years later its owner went bankrupt. Here’s how Van Ness brought their brand back from the brink

It is tempting, when describing a brand emerging from a period of adversity with renewed vigour, to fall back on that old chestnut ‘rising like a phoenix from the ashes’. 

But for JVN, the hair care brand founded by Jonathan Van Ness, star of Netflix’s makeover smash hit Queer Eye, the adage feels appropriate. 

Not least because the affable, flamboyant Van Ness – sporting wing-like bell sleeves for this interview – would make a rather majestic phoenix. 

Of course, every comeback follows a rocky period and for JVN this was the recent high-profile bankruptcy of the brand’s former owner Amyris.
