ISO standard to help identify microbiological low-risk products
Cosmetic guidelines for the risk assessment
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has created a standard that will help the cosmetic industry identify which levels and types of contamination represent a health hazard and which are safe. The ISO 29621:2010, Cosmetics – Microbiology – Guidelines for the risk assessment and identification of microbiologically low-risk products standard will help determine which cosmetic products present a low risk to users, where the likelihood of contamination is extremely low.
A number of product characteristics need to be evaluated when performing a microbiological risk assessment, such as product composition, production conditions, packaging and a combination of these factors. Cosmetics identified as low-risk will not need to undergo further microbiological testing.
