Alexander Wang is free to start making cosmetics and fragrances under his name after a court ruling. The trademark for ‘Alexander Wang’ in Class three goods had previously been held by an unrelated party.
Etincelle Paris, an unconnected person, had previously registered the trademark, along with a selection of others including Isabel Marant and Pierre Hardy, in Class three goods – which covers jewellery, cosmetics and fragrances. Last week the European Union Intellectual Property Office’s Board of Appeals overruled the decision, granting the trademark to Wang instead.
Last year, Wang left his role as Creative Director at Balenciaga and was said to be focusing on building his eponymous label which launched in 2007. He had previously attempted to extend his brand name to cover jewellery and cosmetics in 2012 but was prevented by Paris’ registration.
Wang previously launched the B. Balenciaga fragrance whilst in his previous role. This new ruling leaves him free to create his own scents as well as cosmetics, although there has been no confirmation from him or his team that this will go ahead.
