New research from commercial negotiation specialist The Gap Partnership has found that while senior business executives expect dramatic consolidation in the retail market this year, they believe health and beauty retailers to be relatively safe.

The research, part of The Gap Partnership’s Negotiating in a consolidating market report, draws on a survey of senior executives from 40 retail and FMCG companies. Many believe that as the economic climate intensifies, stronger retailers will capitalise on the opportunity to acquire businesses with financial problems. However, just 2% think that the health and beauty sector is at risk from consolidation. This is a dramatic contrast to the 72% who believe that amalgamation will be a key 2009 trend for the retail market in general.
