The Ordinary has expanded its retinoid product offering for consumers looking for an advanced alternative.
Retinal 0.2% Emulsion (RRP £15.20) is the latest innovation from the skin care brand, aiming to target fine lines, skin tone, texture and radiance after two weeks.
The appearance of frown lines and crow's feet are said to be significantly reduced after six weeks, according to an independent study.
Retinal, also known as retinaldehyde, is a form of vitamin A that is one conversion step closer to the direct form of vitamin A as retinol must undergo two conversions once applied to the skin.
As a result, the retinal makes a more efficient delivery of the molecule needed when applied to the skin.
Unique to The Ordinary, the emulsion uses an encapsulated retinaldehyde, where the retinaldehyde molecules are enveloped by hydroxyapatite particles.
The Ordinary has described the Retinal 0.2% Emulsion as 'retinol's stronger sibling' that is suitable for expert retinoid users.
"The 0.2% concentration of this formulation is considered uncommon and sits on the higher end of concentration level of retinal currently found on the market," explained Prudvi Kaka, Chief Scientific Officer at The Ordinary to Cosmetics Business.
"This new formulation also contains synthetic oat analogues to help target skin discomfort and dryness, which can be common concerns that are associated with the use of retinoid-based products.
"Thanks to the high concentration of retinal, this formula delivers significant benefits with only twice-a-week application."
For beginners retinoid users, The Ordinary encourages consumers to use its Retinol 0.2% in Squalane or Granactive Retinoid 2% Emulsion.
"Many people are intimidated by the category of retinoids as they are perceived as harsh or irritating," continued Kaka.
"Our new formulation is perfect for those who have prior retinoid experience; for those newly starting with retinoids we recommend our retinol in squalane range. These formulations come in a 0.2%, 0.5% and 1% concentration.
"Our beginner-friendly option is the 0.2%. Then, you can slowly work your way up to our 1% option based on your skin’s tolerance.
"Only after your skin is used to retinol, you can move up to our strongest option, our new Retinal 0.2% Emulsion."
To combat risk of discomfort, which any retinoids could cause, the Retinal 0.2% Emulsion is formulated with synthetic oat analogues, otherwise known as avenanthramide.
Natural compounds isolated from oats, the Deciem-owned brand uses the ingredient to target skin discomfort and dryness.
Users can build a skin care regimen with the Retinal 0.2% Emulsion by using the retinoid after the Glycolipid Cream Cleanser and before the Natural Moisturizing Factors + PhytoCeramides.
This latest launch is reflective of The Ordinary's NPD strategy for 2024, added Kaka.
"We wanted to reconfirm our commitment to the democratisation of ingredients, and the commodification of active technologies in minimal formulations," said the cosmetic scientist.
"Last year we launched the Soothing & Barrier Support Serum, which is a new venture into multi-active formulations, and something we want to continue exploring, but we are still very much committed to our original mission.
"Our Retinal 0.2% Emulsion is a great example of this."
