The virtual reality tool is able to more accurately simulate conditions such as ageing, dehydration and sensitivity

A virtual reality (VR) human capable of training skin care professionals about the science behind skin has been launched by personal care brand Dermalogica.

The brand created Natalia as a teaching tool to be used in classes; the training tool is powered by the same photorealistic digital human technology used in the gaming industry and the Metaverse.

Natalia is accessible to consumers and professional skin therapists through videos and VR simulations available online.

“We can now use metaverse technology to train millions of consumers and hundreds of thousands of therapists about changing skin conditions,” said Aurelian Lis, Dermalogica’s Global CEO.

“As the leader in professional skin care education, training over 100,000 skin therapists per year, it’s cool to visually show skin changes and aesthetic treatment techniques in a way previously unimaginable.”

Learners can use the system, which simulates conditions such as ageing, dehydration and sensitivity, to understand how skin responds to natural and environmental triggers.

This offers more accuracy than other training tools, which the brand said typically focus on product results or rely on static images.

Natalia was unveiled alongside the launch of Dermalogica’s Awaken Peptide Eye Gel.

She was used to demonstrate how the skin and muscle surrounding the eye area can be weakened over time.

Learners watched how the fat supporting the eye area migrates into the lower lid, resulting in undereye puffiness that contributes to the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

The brand said it will continue to introduce new ways to use virtual human technology throughout 2022, to help educate consumers and professional skin therapists.
