The national secretary of the French chemical industries' union (CGT), Manuel Blanco has said the announcement of job losses at Chanel would affect in particular the perfumes, cosmetics and accessories sector based at the company's site at Verneuil-en-Halatte in the Oise region.
Blanco said the company has assured the union that the core of the workforce would not be affected but added that there was concern over future projects that had been planned, including a major research laboratory at Pantin as well as investment projects on the group's production sites.
The cutting of 200 jobs is expected to involve some 10% of production posts in France and follows a slowdown in business from the third quarter last year coupled with a relatively bleak forecast for 2009.
