Bayer MaterialScience will for the first time present its innovative raw material solutions designed for Asian personal care market at In-Cosmetics Asia 2013 (Booth no. K40) in Bangkok from October 29 to 31, 2013, under the motto: “Baycusan® for High Performance Cosmetics.” With strong R&D competence and partnership with international personal care brands, Bayer MaterialScience has been actively driving innovations in the personal care industry with advanced raw material solutions and formulations for a wide range of applications, including skin care, sun care, color cosmetics and hair care. Visitors at the Bayer stand will be able to experience its latest product developments: Baycusan® C 1000 for sun care, Baycusan® C 1004/1005 for foundation and BB cream, Baycusan® C 1001 for skin care and Baycusan® C 1008 for hair care.
Eco-friendly and multifunctional cosmetic raw materials
Today there is an increasing awareness of eco-friendly personal care products among the consumers in Asian market. Consumers prefer to buy products that use safe and environment-sensitive ingredients. These products are usually associated with high quality, good brand image and thus are more competitive in the market. “With a unique manufacturing and filling process, we can produce highly pure polyurethanes that are completely free of co-solvents, contain no preservatives and have little smell, to meet this trend,” says Dr. Paula Rodrigues, Global Head of the Cosmetics Business at Bayer MaterialScience.
Bayer MaterialScience offers innovative raw materials for personal care applications based on two technology platforms: waterborne polyurethane film formers and polyurea powder as a sensory additive. Polyurethanes can meet many challenges of formulating modern cosmetic products due to their versatility and beautiful aesthetics. Waterborne Baycusan® film former products can form a clear, odorless film on skin and hair with high elasticity & flexibility and outstanding water resistance. Baycusan® powder products can improve the spreadability, color expression and color uniformity of formulations on skin. Baycusan® product lines are suitable for cold process, useful over a wide range of pH and compatibale with most commonly used cosmetics ingredients.
Versatile personal care solutions for Asian market
Sun care products, formulated with Baycusan® C 1000 waterborne polyurethane dispersions from Bayer MaterialScience, have excellent SPF boosting effect and outstanding water resistance with proven test results. Baycusan® C 1000 can form a highly flexible, breathable film that mimics the movement of skin. This film creates a naturally soft feel on the skin without any tightening sensation for the consumers.
Used as ingredient for color cosmetics, Baycusan® C 1004 dispersion is particularly suitable for mascara and eyeliner, as it enables excellent water resistance and abrasive resistance of the color formulation. It can ensure long lasting and non-bleeding make-up effect. And Baycusan® C 1005 is the ideal choice for foundation and BB cream. It imparts an extremely pleasant and silky skin feel, with high oil absorption capability. It also ensures that pigment-containing products are extremely easy to distribute – without leaving visible traces of color. In powder make-up formulations, the new polymer enhances the luminosity of the colors.
In the skin care category, Bayer MaterialScience has recently developed a new formulation based on Baycusan® C 1001 for peel off masks. It creates a new concept of mask with a perfect fit for different facial shapes and easy application. The peel-off mask can well contain the herbal essence and nutrition ingredients and further enhance skin absorption ability, with comfortable feel advantages. When applied on skin, it will form a transparent film, offering consumers the liberty to sleep and even go out with their facial treatment mask applied. After use, it can be peeled off in one piece easily leaving a pleasant skin feeling.
According to latest trends, Bayer MaterialScience has also developed a series of new formulations based on Baycusan® C 1008 for hair care application. The new formulations are designed to achieve a natural look, strong but flexible holding power and long lasting effect.
“In numerous comparative tests and market feedback, Baycusan® C 1008 is proven to have an excellent high humidity curl retention, style retention and a natural strong hold. We are working closely with our partners on new hairstyling Mists and Gels, which will show superior sensory properties,” says Xiaohui Xiong, Manager of Business Development for the Cosmetics Business at Bayer MaterialScience in Asia Pacific.
The multifunctional sister product, Baycusan® C 1001 dispersion, is also designed for formulating highly effective conditioning products that give hair a natural shine and healthy appearance. A comb or brush glides much more smoothly through the hair treated with these products than hair treated with conventional conditioners based on acrylate copolymers.
“We observe an extremely glossy look especially after hair has been smoothed with a straightening iron. The heat intensifies the shine,” says Dr. Sophie Viala, who is responsible for the technical development of cosmetic raw materials at Bayer MaterialScience. “Therefore, Baycusan® C 1001 is also ideal for very frizzy hair which is often tamed with a straightening iron.” Despite the high heat, the product does not leave any residue in the hair. It forms a uniform film on the hair surface that can be easily removed, leaving hair residue-free.
