Aveda has developed its first new aroma in four years and its first certified organic pure-fume - Rose Attar. The absolute is a blend of certified organic jojoba and Bulgarian rosa damascena essential oils and Aveda says it “is set to make a statement in the prestige category, while also being a shining example of the company's commitment to environmental sustainability”.

Aveda is working closely with partners around the world and says 75% of the tonnage of essential oils it purchases for use in its products are now certified organic. But it is a long-term project and to-date this is only the company's fourth organic product; the others are All-Sensitive Body Formula and Comforting tea bags and loose leaf tea.

The pure-fume rose oil in each 7ml bottle of Rose Attar is distilled from over 500 rose petals from a single harvest. Just 3700 bottles of Rose Attar are being introduced as a limited edition for Valentine's Day.

In the December 2006 issue of SPC magazine you can read an interview with Shannon Hess, Aveda's Aroma Lab research project manager, and learn more about the company's organic initiatives and its work on traceability and sustainability.
