Alibaba Group reveals technology enhancements that enable it to handle and close cases of counterfeit products rapidly

Alibaba Group, the Chinese e-commerce giant, has unveiled ‘express’ enhancements to its Intellectual Property Protection (IPP) Platform.

The enhancements have enabled the company to eliminate fake listings in less than 24 hours.

Alibaba said, of the complaints it receives, 96% are now handled and closed within 24 hours, while 83% of listings are removed.

Declined cases account for 17% of the complaints received. These often arise due to insufficient evidence to prove infringement or a mismatch between the listing and IP documents filed.

Jessie Zheng, Alibaba’s Chief Platform Governance Officer, said: “Brand trust is core to our mission. Our enhanced platform, along with significant progress in other important initiatives all showcase the industry best practices Alibaba is creating for the benefit of all our stakeholders.”

Technology upgrades

Highlights of the technology upgrades include: a single entry point across all Alibaba e-commerce platforms; a streamlined process to assess the validity of complaints; a more automated complaints-processing and analysis system.

A dedicated team has been put in place to reduce response time for enquiries.

The enhancements were announced at Alibaba’s Brand Rights Holders Day, held in Beijing, China on 10 August.

New Kering partnership

Alibaba recently signed an agreement with French luxury group Kering, which manufactures for brands including Gucci, Alexander McQueen and Balenciaga.

The agreement sees the two companies unite to protect IP by taking joint enforcement actions online and offline.
