In 2021, everyone is doing acid. From Pixi’s glycolic acid-powered Glow Tonic to the All-In-One Lactic Acid Treatment under Sunday Riley’s Good Genes label, chemical exfoliating products have become a staple in beauty lovers’ cabinets.
Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) and beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) work by dissolving the ‘glue’ holding adjacent keratinocytes together, meaning the dead cells desquamate to leave smoother skin underneath, which reflects the light more evenly for a more radiant complexion.
AHAs and BHAs are found in nature, with glycolic acid coming from sugarcane, for example, lactic acid from milk and mandelic acid from bitter almonds, although synthetic versions exist and are frequently used.
