Between a growing cost of living crisis and the outbreak of war in Europe, 2022 has proven to be a challenging year for positivity.
In recent months, however, there has been an uptick in beauty lovers experimenting on bold and bright colours, tapping into the aptly named ‘dopamine beauty’ aesthetic.
Almost standing in opposition to the toned down ‘clean girl look, dopamine beauty has struck a chord with social media users and professional beauty artists across the globe.
Sir John, the US Creative Director of L’Oréal Paris and make-up artist for celebrities such as Beyoncé, said: “The idea of dopamine glam came to me when I noticed how much colour theory affects my overall mood and expression in make-up.”
Echoing this view, Laurie Pressman, Vice President of the Pantone Color Institute, added: “The colours we wear influence how we feel as well as the perceptions of those we come into contact with.
“The moment we look in the mirror, the reflection we see back acts to shape our mood.”
“Emotionally charged palettes raise our spirits. Sending a message of vibrant positivity and joyfulness they uplift and energise.

This has been coupled with an increase in products being specifically marketed as mood-boosting, and comes after an uptick in cosmetic ingredients being specifically created to boost the user’s emotional wellbeing over the past two years. This has grown in line with the well-documented rise of the wellness economy.
