Wella consolidates hair cosmetics production in Hünfeld
Far from closing its Hünfeld site with the loss of 1000 jobs, as reported in the July issue of ECM, P&G is moving all its European hair cosmetics aerosol production to the Wella site and investing €11m over the next two years in new production capacity.
“P&G studied its European hair cosmetics aerosol production and one of the ideas was to see if it was worthwhile to consolidate our production, and if so, where,” Wella's corporate spokesman Lars Ortlieb told ECM. “The results of the study were very positive for Hünfeld and it will now be the hub hair cosmetics aerosol production site for Europe and a Centre of Excellence for P&G”.
Unfortunately, the increased volume at Hünfeld will be achieved through new automated equipment and 50 jobs will be phased out over the next 18-24 months, although Ortlieb stressed that these will be voluntary redundancies as far as possible. It also means that hair cosmetics aerosol production at P&G's UK site will be relocated to Hünfeld but this is unlikely to put jobs at risk.
