The slump in the world’s economy may be affecting many in the industry in a negative way, but it seems The Perfume Shop has been given a fragrant boost, after it announced record online sales for 2008.


The slump in the world’s economy may be affecting many in the industry in a negative way, but it seems The Perfume Shop has been given a fragrant boost, after it announced record online sales for 2008.

The UK retailer’s online business has been particularly successful with figures, ended 28th December 2008 jumping 149% on the previous year. Growth has been attributed to an overhaul of the website www.theperfumeshop.com in November last year and as a result like for like sales in December reached 293%. The growth has made its online business one of the top ten highest turnover stores in its business.

Perfume Shop stores also recorded positive sales in store, and the company said that it sold three bottles of fragrance every second in the four week run up to Christmas.

The company is opening several new stores including second stores in the UK cities of Liverpool, Bristol and Belfast, as well as a concept store in the new Westfield shopping centre in London.

“I am really pleased with how we have done in 2008 – we knew it was going to be a tough year and I am delighted to see how well our stores have performed,” said coo, Jo Walker. “It has been much publicised that 2009 will be equally tough but I am confident that we have a strong offer, excellent store teams and a solid business which will continue to perform well again this year.”
