The bulk of the 120 billion individual units of packaging put into circulation each year by the global cosmetics industry is made of plastic, an equally substantial proportion of which has been non-recyclable.
As a result, over 70% of it ends up as post-consumer waste in landfill, waiting to be unearthed by a future archaeologist a thousand years hence; a testament to the profligacy and lack of social conscience that characterised 21st century consumerism – not to mention the carbon footprint incurred in its manufacture and a life expectancy that never realised its full potential.
