Dow Corning has formulated two naturally-derived substitutes for petrolatum. Its new HY-3050 Soy Wax and HY-3051 Soy Wax Blend have been developed for use in skin care, colour cosmetics, hair care and underarm products.

“Although petrolatum has a long history as a widely used low cost ingredient in personal care products, future availability may be limited and costs will likely be higher,” said Yan Cortes, Dow Corning’s global new market development leader. “The soy wax blend is the first acceptable alternative to petrolatum for personal care applications.”

Formulators can use the moisturising, emollient wax to create a more pliable stick or soft solid, as product hardness can be adapted by increasing the concentration of wax.

The blend combines HY-3050 Soy Wax with hydrogenated soy oil. It can be used in skin care products and as a hair conditioning agent to control frizz and add shine.

Dow Corning can also blend its soy waxes with silicones to give products a silicone feel.
